Air mattress or camp bed: which should you choose?

Comparing air mattresses, self-inflating mats, foam pads and camp beds: comfort, insulation, packed size, durability and price. Which suits which kind of camping.

Camp beds and air mattresses are not separated by comfort — both can be excellent — but by context of use. In short: a camp bed for a fixed pitch reached by car with room to spare, a self-inflating mat for general use, a thick air mattress for maximum comfort in a car, and a hiking mat for anything you carry.

R-value, the criterion they share

Before comparing formats, a reminder that applies to all of them: the mat is your main insulator, not the sleeping bag. Crushed under the body, a bag’s fill stops insulating and heat leaves towards the ground by conduction.

Thermal resistance is measured as an R-value:

  • R under 2: summer, dry and temperate ground;
  • R 2 to 4: three seasons, ordinary use;
  • R over 4: cold ground, late season, mountains.

R-values add up: putting a foam pad rated R 1.5 under a mat rated R 2 gives the equivalent of R 3.5. It is the cheapest way to extend your season.

The foam pad

Light, indestructible, immune to punctures, and the cheapest of the lot. Its insulation is modest but completely reliable: it never deflates in the middle of the night. Comfort, on the other hand, is limited, particularly for side sleepers, and it is bulky when packed since it does not compress.

Use: backup, an extra layer of insulation under another mat, or deliberately minimal bivouac.

The self-inflating mat

Open-cell foam sealed inside an airtight shell: opening the valve lets the foam expand and draw air in. You top it up by mouth to set the firmness.

It is the best all-round compromise: solid, even insulation thanks to the foam, decent comfort from 3 to 8 cm thick, and a puncture does not make it useless — the foam keeps supporting and insulating. The trade-offs are weight and packed size against an air mat of equivalent comfort.

The air mattress

Two very different families share the name.

The car-camping mattress, 15 to 25 cm thick, inflated by pump or a built-in motor, gives comfort close to a bed at home. Its weakness is thermal: filled with free air, it lets internal convection currents cool the sleeper. Below 12 to 15 °C you feel cold on it whatever your sleeping bag. A blanket between the mattress and the bag corrects it effectively.

The hiking air mat, 5 to 9 cm thick, built with internal baffles or filled with fibre and reflective film, reaches high R-values for 400 to 700 g and a packed size like a water bottle. It is the best performing option for moving camps, the most expensive per litre, and the one that demands care around thorns and grit — hence the repair kit, which travels with it always.

The camp bed

Fabric stretched over a folding frame, 20 to 40 cm off the ground. Its arguments are real: you sit down and stand up without effort — decisive for anyone with limited mobility, or after a day of walking — you store things underneath, and you are physically separated from ground damp, sand and insects.

Two limits, though, are decisive depending on context. Bulk and weight: a camp bed travels by car and nothing else, and takes up the space of two sleeping bags in the boot. Insulation: contrary to intuition, being raised makes you colder, because air circulates freely under the fabric. Below 10 °C a bare camp bed is colder than a mat on the ground. The fix is simple: lay a foam pad or a thin self-inflating mat on top.

Finally, check the stated maximum load and the stability of the feet: on soft ground, thin feet sink and the whole thing tips. Some very low models, sold as low-profile cots, combine part of the benefit with a smaller packed size.

How to decide

  • Car camping, fixed pitch, room to spare, hard or damp ground → camp bed, with an insulating pad on top. It packs away with the rest of the camp furniture.
  • Car camping, comfort above all → thick air mattress, with a blanket as extra insulation.
  • One mat for everything → self-inflating, 5 to 8 cm: the best reliability-to-comfort ratio.
  • Hiking, bivouac, bike → a high R-value hiking air mat, or a thin self-inflating mat if you prefer peace of mind. The rest of that load is covered in the bivouac gear list.

Making it last

Inflate with a pump or an inflation bag rather than by mouth: the moisture in your breath encourages mould inside an air mattress. Never inflate fully in direct sun, since the air expands and stresses the seams. Always put a groundsheet or thin tarp underneath. And store self-inflating mats unrolled with the valve open, so the foam keeps its loft.

Frequently asked questions

Is a camp bed warmer than a mat?
No, and below 10 °C it is the other way round. The bed lifts you up but lets air circulate freely underneath, which cools you by convection. An insulating pad laid on the fabric fixes it.
How thick should an air mattress be?
At least 7 to 10 cm to sleep on your side without touching the ground, and up to 20 cm on car-camping mattresses. For hiking you come down to 5-6 cm to keep weight and packed size in check.
Why is my air mattress cold at night?
A mattress simply filled with air lets convection currents circulate inside: air cooled by the ground rises against the sleeper. Mattresses with internal fill or a cellular structure, indicated by an R-value, remove that effect.
How do you repair a punctured air mattress?
Inflate it, spray soapy water to find the bubbles, dry it carefully, deflate, then apply the patch from the supplied kit and keep it under a weight for several hours. A leak at the valve, on the other hand, rarely repairs.
